Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Ministry of Railways, Government of India have released the official short notice for recruitment of Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) through Centralized Employment Notice (CEN) No. 01/2026. A total of 11,127 vacancies are available for the post of ALP across various Railway zones and Production Units. This is one of the most awaited railway recruitment drives and offers a golden opportunity for ITI/Diploma/Engineering candidates to join Indian Railways.

What is Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP)?
An Assistant Loco Pilot is responsible for assisting the Loco Pilot (Train Driver) in operating trains. The ALP ensures smooth and safe running of the locomotive. Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting the Loco Pilot in driving and operating the locomotive
- Monitoring signals, track conditions, and safety equipment
- Checking brake systems and other mechanical components before departure
- Communicating with station masters and control rooms
- Taking over driving duties in case of emergency or as per roster
After gaining experience, an ALP can be promoted to Loco Pilot (Goods), then Loco Pilot (Passenger), and eventually Loco Pilot (Mail/Express), and further to Senior Loco Pilot and Power Controller.
Educational Qualification – RRB ALP 2026
Candidates must fulfill any one of the following educational requirements:
- 10th Pass + ITI: Passed Matriculation (10th) from a recognized board PLUS ITI certificate (National Trade Certificate - NTC) in any of the eligible trades recognized by NCVT/SCVT
- Diploma in Engineering: 3-year Diploma in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile Engineering from AICTE recognized institution
- Degree in Engineering: B.E. / B.Tech in Mechanical / Electrical / Electronics / Automobile Engineering from a recognized university

Stage 3: CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test)
Tests the psychological aptitude of candidates to assess their suitability for the job of ALP. No negative marking in CBAT.
Selection Process – RRB ALP 2026
- CBT-1 (First Stage) – Screening test to shortlist candidates (15x vacancies)
- CBT-2 (Second Stage) – Main exam with Part A (General) + Part B (Technical/Trade)
- CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test) – Psychological/aptitude test for shortlisted candidates
- Document Verification (DV) – Verification of original certificates, caste certificate, etc.
- Medical Examination – Medical fitness test including vision standards (Aye-1 for ALP)
Medical Standards for ALP
- Visual Acuity: Distant vision 6/6 in both eyes without glasses (Aye-1 standard)
- Color Vision: Must have normal color vision – no color blindness
- Hearing: Normal hearing in both ears
- No night blindness, no squint
- Candidates with spectacles or contact lenses are NOT eligible for ALP post
Salary & Pay Scale – RRB ALP 2026
- Pay Level: Level-2 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix
- Basic Pay: ₹19,900 per month
- Gross Salary: Approximately ₹35,000 – ₹42,000 per month (including DA, HRA, TA)
- Additional Benefits: Free Railway Pass, Medical facilities, Provident Fund, Gratuity, Pension (NPS), Quarters/HRA, Leave encashment
- After Promotion to Loco Pilot: Pay Level-5 (₹29,200 – ₹92,300) with gross salary ₹55,000 – ₹70,000 per month

- Click on "CEN 01/2026 ALP Apply Online" link (available from 15 May 2026)
- Register with valid Email ID, Mobile Number, and Aadhaar
- Fill in personal details – name, DOB, father's name, address
- Fill educational qualification details – 10th, ITI/Diploma/Degree information
- Select preferred RRB zone and language for examination
- Upload passport size photo (20-50 KB, JPG) and signature (10-20 KB, JPG)
- Pay application fee through Debit Card / Credit Card / Net Banking / UPI
- Review and submit the application form
- Take printout of the application for future reference
